Scientific collaboration between China and Germany has entered a critical phase. From cases of illegal acquisition of scientific knowledge by Chinese institutions through such cooperation to overt cases of espionage, from the positioning of Chinese personnel within German institutions to the hindrance of German academics researching in China: numerous accounts of such raise the question if unguarded cooperation is even still possible. To examine this issue, the conference will first look at the situation in China with regard to science, a shift in values and the military-industrial complex. Next, we will consider the state of German-Chinese academic and research cooperation in different scientific organizations. Finally, we will reflect on what a new security architecture in the science sector must look like, one which at the same time will maintain academic freedom.
