ABSTRACT

The uprising of the Sicilian communes against the King of Naples, which began in 1282, is part of the standard repertoire of the Romantic imagination of history. The Europe-wide circulation of the "Vespri siciliani" and its representation in literature, melodrama and visual art provide the starting point of an interdisciplinary colloquium about the medial transformation and popularisation of revolts in Germany and Italy between the revolutionary age and the Risorgimento.
