The pandemic of Covid-19 has shuttered the whole international system with serious consequences for the European Union, sharpening the domestic rifts, which seemed to have healed with the 2019 European elections. The Union is standing at an important crossroads: on one hand the lures of nationalism are pushing to the return of a national system, on the other hand the growing necessity of a federal solution concerning the economy, the environment, the defence and security. What is going to be Europe’s role for the future in the international scenario in relation to the largest world powers?
