ABSTRACT

Models of Transmission: Source, Influence, Series

The second meeting of the project Travelling Concepts. Towards a Terminological Cartography for Art History and Theory will focus on a key element of art historical thinking and writing: namely the models of transmission and temporality and the terms related to them.

In this regard, the three terms included in the title refer to some of the well-established concepts through which the history of art has dealt with the question of the modes of transmission of forms, practices and knowledge. The purpose of the meeting is to explore the contexts, meanings, and operations involved in the choice of these models and terms - particularly with regard to the various manifestations, similarities, and shifts that emerge through the three linguistic domains and their scholarly traditions. The second conversation is thus directed, for instance, to the idea of “series” (also in its etymological links to “theory”), to a critical revision of the concept of “influence” and - overall - to questions about models of temporality and the role of anachronism in the history and theory of the arts and images.
