The new edition of the Vigoni Students' Forum, founded in 2012 thanks to the support of the Circolo degli Amici and aimed at university students of different disciplines, will be held from 8 to 11 September 2019. This year's theme is "United States of Europe – hope, nightmare or utopia?". Many decades have passed since Winston Churchill appealed to the then European heads of government in his famous speech in Zurich in 1946, strongly supporting the need to build "a kind of United States of Europe". With the 1957 Treaties of Rome and the first European Community a "certain type of unity in Europe", to paraphrase the British statesman, was truly achieved, until we reached what we now know as the European Union. In more than sixty years of integration of our continent, the narrative of the United States of Europe has never abandoned the political discourse: sometimes cited as a model from which to distance oneself, other times as a vision to aspire to, and still other times as a mantra to be proposed in the absence of alternatives. Today, in a completely new world compared to the last century, the time has finally come to deal with the United States of Europe. Finally, we need to ask ourselves whether the American model of integration and all that it represents can be a viable path for European states. The purpose of this investigation is to understand how constructive the European Union can be in such a model and how much it reproduces a false myth.
