On the 24th of February, Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine marked a turning point in contemporary European history. Apart from the tragic consequences for Kiev, the initiation of the conflict has provoked a diversified conclusion on a global level: the explicit alienation from the actions of the Kremlin by Euro-American countries has in fact not been adopted by political actors outside of NATO. The beginning of the hostilities has put the entire international system to the test.
Beginning from the reconstruction of the political and military institutions in Russia, the article written by Ludgar Kühnhardt analyses the Russian-Ukrainian conflict from different perspectives, not limiting himself to the casus belli but attempting to delineate the future scenarios that could be caused by this dramatic conflict at the gates of the EU.
The article is published in cooperation with the Zentrum für Europäische Integrationsforschung (ZEI) of the University of Bonn.
