Heinrich Mylius and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: a Frankfurt Businessman in Milan and his Musical Network

Heinrich Mylius was a well-known merchant, entrepreneur and banker in his native city of Frankfurt. His financial investments and technical innovations, alongside his political and social engagement, also made Mylius a distinguished citizen of his adopted hometown Milan. What is more, he played an important role in various cultural contexts.

This lecture by Viola Usselmann, Junior Follow at Villa Vigoni, will explore a particular aspect of the manifold interrelations between Heinrich Mylius and the Italian-German music scene for the first time, reconstructing the multifaceted relationship between Mylius and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Milan and Frankfurt during the first half of the nineteenth century.
