The conference seeks to discuss the problematic notion of Europe's cultural identity on a theoretical level. Here, the poetry of Friedrich Hölderlin and music as an example of a universal language are taken as a model. Not only from a linguistic perspective, but also from that of the themes of his late poetry and his translations, a renewed examination of Hölderlin's work and of music can open up new ways of rethinking Europe's cultural roots.
