Since its beginning, the museum has been considered by some to be a trailblazer of democracy by granting a growing public access to objects of cultural heritage, and yet, throughout its existence, it has also elicited criticism. Objections have been raised against a collection's composition, its display and presentation, the narratives it tells, and most recently, the provenance of objects. This conference looks to reflect on radically different manifestations of museums and their potential by examining fictional collection designs in comics, films, video clips, etc., as well as in the imaginary spread by marketing strategies: What alternative and counter-designs to existing museums
have been proposed? What might future museums look like?
