Ignazio Vigoni Medici di Marignano (1905-1983) stipulated in his will (1978) that a “centre for Italian and German culture” should be created in memory of his family, especially his great- grandfather Heinrich/Enrico Mylius (1769-1854).

To make this possible, he bequeathed his entire property in Loveno (Menaggio) on Lake Como to the Federal Republic of Germany.

After his death in 1983, the Federal Republic of Germany began negotiations with the Italian Republic in order to establish an idea of this German-Italian centre. The Villa Vigoni Association was founded in 1986, registered in Germany in 1987 and in Italy the following year.

The ‘unique selling point’ of Villa Vigoni is its binational character. The main sponsors on the Italian side are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and on the German side the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Aeronautics (BMFTR).

Thanks to the collaboration between the two ministries, Villa Vigoni fulfils its mission: it deepens and strengthens the dialogue between the two countries, and the wider conversation across Europe in general, in the fields of science, politics and culture, with a particular focus on the younger generations.
Villa Vigoni is a place where scientifically and socially relevant issues are discussed: the present political conjuncture, the European unification process, social developments, the economy and the environment, the natural sciences and the humanities. Villa Vigoni is involved in research projects and public debates on topics that affect civil society in both countries.
