As key development of trilateral cooperation, Villa Vigoni, together with the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani and in cooperation with Fudan University (Shanghai), will organize from 25 to 31 October 2025 the Autumn School in European Studies 2025, titled “Multilateralism in the Post-Global World. Nations, Politics and International Relations.”
The initiative will open in Rome (October 25–28) at the Treccani Institute and conclude at Villa Vigoni (October 28–31), aiming to bring together distinguished scholars and students from Europe and China to engage in an in-depth examination of the evolving dynamics of national sovereignty, international cooperation, and cultural diplomacy within the context of an increasingly multipolar global order.
The programme’s initial phase in Rome, hosted by Treccani, will focus on the role of culture and heritage in global governance, with contributions from experts in diplomacy, the arts, and cultural policy. The seminar at Villa Vigoni will further enrich this academic exchange through lectures and focused working groups exploring the political, social, and institutional dimensions of contemporary international relations.
In an era marked by the reassertion of national sovereignty and shifting globalization patterns, states are prioritizing economic, technological, and geopolitical interests, necessitating a delicate balance between domestic imperatives and global engagement. The complex and multipolar international system requires adaptive strategies with which to navigate competing alliances and cooperative frameworks.
The Autumn School will explore critical questions concerning national strategies, alliance-building, and the balancing of domestic priorities with international responsibilities.
Participants include professors and researchers from Fudan University, the Italian Universities of Bologna, Salento, Bocconi (Milan) and the German Universities of Hamburg, and Flensburg, among others.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by H.E. Massimo Ambrosetti, Italian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, and Dr. Massimo Bray, Director General of the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani.
The cooperation between Villa Vigoni and Fudan University builds on the previous academic exchange held in May 2025 regarding the China–EU Dialogue on Culture and Global Governance, jointly organised by the Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) of Fudan University, the Treccani Institute, and Villa Vigoni. Both projects constitute significant milestones, fostering dialogue between European and Chinese academic institutions and reinforcing the foundations for sustained trilateral collaboration in the fields of education, research, and cultural exchange.
