We draw attention to the contribution by Prof. Elena Raponi, entitled “The German Community in Milan between the 19th and 20th Century. The Dispersed Collection of the Library of the Deutscher Sprachverein in Milan”.
The article outlines the history of the Deutscher Sprachverein in Mailand, which was established in 1887/88 and became a point of reference for the German community in Milan until the outbreak of the First World War.
After the end of the Second World War, the authorities confiscated several crates of books from the German consulate in Milan and entrusted them to the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense. Among these volumes – mostly nineteenth-century editions of German and European literature – there were hundreds belonging to the original collection of the Deutscher Sprachverein. They represent a valuable testimony to the intense cultural exchange between Italy and Germany.
Professor Raponi’s contribution highlights the economic and cultural context of the German community in Milan between the 19th and 20th century, emphasising the close relations between the two countries.
