Ambassador Dr. Susanne Wasum-Rainer is the German President of the German-Italian Centre for the European Dialogue Villa Vigoni.
She served as a research fellow in the field of International Security at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and entered the German Foreign Service (Auswärtiger Dienst) in 1987.
From 1997 to 2000, she held the position of Deputy Head of the Political Department at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in Geneva.
From 2000 to 2012, she was appointed Head of the Public International Law Division (2002-2006), Deputy Head of the Legal Department and Commissioner for Matters of General and Special International Law (2006-2009), as well as Head of the Legal Department, representing Germany in proceedings before international courts, and as Legal Advisor on International Law to the Federal Government (2009-2012).
Dr. Susanne Wasum-Rainer was the first woman to hold leadership positions both as a diplomat and an executive, at the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office and as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Paris, Rome and Tel Aviv.
