The news of Michael Stürmer’s death has deeply saddened us. We had known Michael Stürmer for many years, followed his work, and held him in high regard both as a person and as a scholar.
Stürmer was a prominent and discerning figure in the German and European intellectual scene. He was deeply committed to the fields of history, journalism, and institutions. He participated in cultural debates with clarity and passion, interpreting the past and present on a scholarly basis—even in highly controversial contexts.
We will remember with great admiration his profound analyses, his extraordinary knowledge, and his kindness. He was a friend and patron to Villa Vigoni and, for many of us, personally as well. We are grateful for the privilege of having experienced so many unforgettable moments of exchange and mutual appreciation with Michael Stürmer.
