In a global context marked by increasingly complex crises, fostering dialogue is essential to the envisioning of new horizons. This objective is shared by the Young Villa Vigoni, within whose framework the second edition of the Debate and Networking Seminar took place from 10 to 13 November, this year entitled “European Federalism and the Strengthening of the Young Italian-German Network”. In line with the mission of Villa Vigoni, the initiative aims to promote dialogue between Italy and Germany and within Europe, offering young members an open and critical space for discussion on current issues, in the unique surroundings of Lake Como.

The 2025 edition focused in particular on the project of a united, federal Europe as an opportunity to tackle contemporary challenges: What kind of governance is needed to reinforce the EU’s internal cohesion and external credibility? Is the idea of a European federation convincing? What role could Europe play as a global actor in the new multipolar order?

To stimulate discussion and provide insights and opportunities for deeper reflection, speakers included experts with an academic background as well as young activists: Prof. Roberto Castaldi, Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence fEUture at eCampus University; Prof. Antonio Padoa-Schioppa, jurist, historian, and author of “Destini incrociati. Europa e crisi globali”; Dr. Julian Plottka of the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP); and Amanda Ribichini, Secretary General of the Italian section of the Young European Federalists.

At the same time, participants – students, researchers, and young professionals under 35, united by their interest in European affairs – reflected on the networking opportunities offered by Villa Vigoni and on how to enhance them through new ideas, energies, and forms of collaboration. The shared goal of the Seminar, and of the Young Villa Vigoni itself, is to actively contribute to the development of Italian-German and European relations, supporting the construction of a democratic and supportive Europe, future-oriented yet active in the present.
