In the Italian general elections of September 2022, the centre-right coalition secured a clear victory with almost 44% of the vote. The right-wing nationalist party Fratelli d’Italia emerged as the strongest political force, with 26%. Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Fratelli d’Italia, became Italy’s first female Prime Minister, heading the country’s most right-wing government in history. The conference sought to explore how to engage in dialogue with a party like Fratelli d’Italia, particularly on key issues such as the future of the European Union. It focused on discussing the identity of conservative parties within the European People’s Party and exchanging views on the future direction of European conservatism.
