Religion has returned to the public agenda—across Europe and worldwide. Yet the ways it is approached in scholarly research differ markedly within Europe: between confessional theology at public universities and secular approaches to the study of religion; between public funding and private philanthropy; between the integration of religious scholarly traditions and a commitment to institutional neutrality.
The “European Dialogues on Religion”—hosted by Villa Vigoni in cooperation with the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster—bring leading scholars from across Europe together to examine these differences comparatively. The focus is on Germany and Italy, complemented by perspectives from Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Austria, and Switzerland. The inaugural conference will be held 1–4 December 2025 at Villa Vigoni (Loveno di Menaggio).
The programme features thematic panels, a high-profile closing discussion, and ample space for open exchange and networking. It is aimed at scholars in theology, religious studies, and related disciplines.
