The uprising of the Sicilian communes against the King of Naples, which began in 1282, belongs to the standard repertoire of the romantic imagination of history. The Europe-wide circulation of the “Vespri siciliani” and their depiction in literature, melodrama, and visual arts formed the starting point for an interdisciplinary colloquium on the media transformation and popularization of revolts in Germany and Italy between the Age of Revolutions and the Risorgimento.
