The youth encounter “The Memories of the Others” aims to bring together twenty young Germans and Italians who will embark on a journey of collective reflection about the relation of history and democracy. Through encounters with contemporary witnesses and experts as well as visiting historically significant places in Rome, a confrontation with the destiny of prosecuted groups during the Italian fascism (2022-1945) and the German occupation of Italy (1943-1945) will be encouraged and enhanced. The goal of the project is to ‘intergenerationally’ reappraise the totalitarian past of both countries. We thereby want to contribute to a lasting sensitivity for the democratic and constitutional future of Europe.
