In this workshop we engage in parallel reading of works by Ernesto de Martino and Julius Lips with regard to their notions of “co-presence”. Since both authors have influenced anthropology and neighbouring disciplines in similar ways, we strive for new insights by reading them together. We focus on the shared, embodied co-presence with “ethnographic others” that is central for both authors. Participants reflect on problems of gaining co-presence and coevalness in contemporary fragmented societies and discuss the role of ethnographic others in a globalized world.
