The past twenty years have seen a resurgence of interest in the future of broadcasting opera, yet little attention has been paid to the remaking of opera on television in the past. The conference seeks to reconstruct the history of these productions, addressing an important aspect of the musicotheatrical, medial, cultural, and social life of several countries around the world. Its main aims are: to map out a transnational network of opera on television in the twentieth century; to develop a common language for theorizing and analyzing opera on television; and to compare techniques for archival research in different countries and institutions.

Within the framework of the German-Italian cooperation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – Villa Vigoni)
