The problem of Catholic-Protestant relations in West Germany during the 1950s has not attracted significant historiographical interest, much less has it been analyzed from the perspective of the Roman Curia. In the Federal Republic, closer contacts between the members of the two Christian denominations took shape, and alongside the persistence of traditional religious contrasts, new forms of cooperation in various fields came into being. The conference aims to shed light on the issue of interdenominational coexistence by examining the political, socio-cultural and theological spheres: in this respect, special attention will be paid to the attitude of the Holy See – and thus Pope Pius XII – towards German developments.
