For democracy to function, political elites must abide by the written and unwritten rules of the game. In recent years, we have witnessed parties and office-holders manipulating democratic procedures to their own advantage. At the same time, citizens’ commitment to democratic procedures may be less firm than previously thought. The workshop will explore the ways in which democratic institutions are contested and changed, considering both processes leading to autocratization and processes leading to democratic innovation and renewal.
