Within the framework of the German-Italian cooperation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – Villa Vigoni).
The conference intends to put ceremonial research for the Roman monarchy on a new basis, focusing on the idea that the ceremony is a creative moment, constitutive of imperial power, and not merely ornamental. With this in mind, everyday ceremonial will have a prominent place in the conference, alongside the grand ceremonies traditionally explored; both will be investigated in their evolution from Augustus onwards, so as to overcome the traditional dichotomy between the principate and Late Antiquity. During the conference, an intensive exchange between participants will be fostered, with short interventions and discussions on texts and documents.
