The topic of ‘war’ is unfortunately omnipresent these months: the importance of ensuring that dangerous messages cannot cause harm if they are intercepted is back in the news. To protect important information, one of the most widespread systems is cryptography. As early as the 15th century, elaborate ciphers were developed in the Italian States to transmit secret messages. The variety of systems adopted makes their systematic study by a single researcher impossible. A team is therefore needed to tackle the subject and bring it into the broader context of the circulation of political-diplomatic information, by tracing encryption techniques and logics in the Renaissance.
