La felicità a un crocevia

Intelletti, rivelazione e politica nel pensiero arabo, ebraico e latino del Medioevo.
Studi in memoria di Mauro Zonta

The essays in the first section of this volume explore, from different perspectives, the interweaving of paths that makes up the philosophical theme of happiness within three different Middle Ages: the Arabic, the Hebrew, and the Latin. Happiness (or rather happinesses, in the plural form) can be regarded as a point of convergence and connection for multiple lines of inquiry. These include the theory of the intellects (of remote Aristotelian origin); the philosophy of prophecy, that is, the conceptual tools used to account for the phenomenon attested by revealed texts; and the engagement with religious Law, or the relationship between philosophy and revelation. The authors examined are al-Farabi, Ibn Bajja (Avempace) in the Hebrew tradition, Averroes, Maimonides, Gersonides, and Thomas Aquinas, concluding with Spinoza, who is regarded, somewhat provocatively, as the last of the medievals.

The second section of the volume is dedicated to Mauro Zonta, the Pavia-based scholar who died prematurely in 2017. He taught us to read the Middle Ages in plural terms, and he is remembered here from both a personal and a scholarly perspective. The essays are expanded versions of papers presented at two study days held in autumn 2023 in Zonta’s memory. The study days were organized by the Centre for Interreligious Studies at the Collegio Borromeo in Pavia.
